The first memory I have of hearing recorded music was a popular r&b/soul record my father used to play at the house. The cover is burned into my mind’s eye - the artist at the center of a rose-like pattern that repeated into infinity. Some 30 years later I’d see this artist perform live for the first time. Upon hearing the opening vocal harmonies seconds into the show I cried so hard I could barely breathe let alone speak - my friends were all trying to make sure I was ok. It felt like I was meeting my estranged father for the first time.

Deeply cherished memories like these have a unique ability to reflect us onto ourselves like two mirrors facing each other. Our consciousness implodes into itself, makes us gaze into the depths of our own identity within human nature and across the entire illusion of time. We feel these moments keen as the first, fresh as the last – and the walls that time and life itself have built to protect us from one another dissolve into nothing.

Complex, vulnerable and sacred. Pure humanity. What are we doing to protect and enhance this depth in our consciousness? Do we love and honor the full depth of possibility in our native consciousness with the experiences we create? Does our accelerating insatiability for non-stop experience have us stuck between those two mirrors, undervaluing authenticity, trust and love among one another? Have we passed an unknown point of no return? These were the thoughts that pass through me Like Eyes Closed To The Sun.
